Jumper cables on a car battery | Johnny Londoff Chevrolet

How to Jump a Car Battery

Having a dead battery can seem like the worst thing of the day, but there's no need to feel discouraged. Follow these simple steps, and you'll be back on the road in no time. Gather your supplies: - a set of jumper cables - another vehicle, a charged battery or portable power unit - safety equipment, such as gloves and safety glasses   1) Identify the positive terminal on both batteries, marked with red. 2) In the vehicle with the dead battery, identify an unpainted metal surface that is not next to the battery. 3) Connect a positive (red) jumper cable clamp to the positive (red) post of the dead battery. 4) Connect the other positive (red) jumper cable clamp to the good battery’s positive (red) post. WARNING: Do NOT allow the positive and negative jumper cable clamps to touch once connected to a battery. This will generate sparks. 5) Connect the black (negative) clamp on that same end of the jumper cable to the negative (black) post of the good battery. 6) IMPORTANT: Connect the other negative (black) clamp to the unpainted metal surface under the hood of the car with the dead battery. DO NOT connect to the negative post of the dead battery – this could cause an explosion. 7) Start the good vehicle, allow it to run for about 5 minutes with the jumper cables connected. Attempt to start the disabled vehicle; if the engine won’t turn over, try repositioning the negative (black) jumper cable connected to the unpainted metal surface. Ensure the surface is clean so as to allow for a good connection. If the engine doesn’t turn over after a couple more minutes, try to race the good vehicle’s engine a little so the alternator delivers more amperage. 8) Once the dead vehicle has started, remove the jumper cables in the reverse order they were connected. Allow the vehicle to run for at least 10 minutes before turning off, to recharge the battery. Image via pixabay.com

5 Ways to Keep The Family Entertained on Your Next Road Trip

Road trips are always fun and exciting, until you're a few miles into a long car ride and your children start complaining that they're bored or start squabbling with one another. To make sure everyone has a good time on your next road trip, use some of these tips and tricks to keep your children busy and entertained. Create an Art Kit Children are very creative, and they love expressing this creativity through art. Before you leave on your road trip, put together an art kit your kids can use to stay entertained. Make sure you pack a variety of items in the kit so they don't get bored with it. Some good options for an art kit include washable crayons and markers, paper, stickers, and tape. If you put everything in a small plastic storage box, the box can then double as a lap desk. Pack Snacks Few things are more difficult than grumpy children who have empty stomachs. Packing a few snacks for your children to eat while they're in the car can help them pass the time and stave off sniping when they get hungry. Just make sure you carefully plan what type of snacks you pack. Giving your kids sugary snacks when they're cooped up in a car may backfire on you. Instead, look for healthy snacks such as nuts, crackers, cereals, and fruit. Also, don't forget to pack water and napkins! Bring Along a Favorite Movie If you have a particularly long road trip, consider packing a few favorite television shows and movies on DVD to provide a few hours of entertainment. If your vehicle doesn't come equipped with a rear seat entertainment system, you can pack a portable DVD player for your children to use. To make sure you can enjoy your music without having the sounds from the DVD disturbing you, don't forget to pack headphones for your kids. Play a Road Trip Game When your kids get tired of movies and art, teach them to play a road trip game. One of the classic road trip games is License Plate Bingo. Simply print out bingo cards with different license plates on them to see who can get a bingo first. If you laminate the cards and use dry erase markers, you can easily play the game again and again. Other great road trip games to teach your kids include I Spy, 20 Questions, and My Cow. Give The Kids a Camera Taking pictures is always fun, especially when you're on a road trip. Consider getting your children digital cameras they can use to take pictures during the trip. Since the cameras are digital, your kids can take pictures of anything that's inside or outside the car to keep them entertained. They can then simply delete the ones they don't want to keep. Although children can start to feel a little bored when they're on a long road trip, these tips will keep them entertained so everyone has a good time when you hit the road! Should You Buy or Lease Your Next Acura?

When shopping for a new Acura, the question often arises, "Should I buy or lease?" Consider factors such as monthly budget allowance, vehicle usage, and upfront and turn-in costs before you decide. Let's break it down. Monthly Payments When you lease a vehicle, it is a lower monthly payment. Essentially, you are paying for the wear and tear of the vehicle, plus interest, while driving it over the term of the lease. If a 2019 Acura MDX costs $40,000 and the depreciated value when finished is $30,000, you end up paying $10,000. This is called the Residual Value. For three years, this example translates to $278 per month. more When you finance a 2019 Acura MDX, you pay the entire $40,000. You will most likely need to put a deposit down, or trade in a vehicle, and finance the rest. Let's say you trade in your old vehicle for $10,000 and finance the balance. A five-year note will cost you around $500 per month at a zero interest rate. At a 4.9 percent interest rate, that number jumps to $565 per month, twice the amount of a lease payment. Ownership When you lease, you never own that sporty Acura NSX. It is like paying rent on an apartment. When your term is up, you turn the vehicle in and you get nothing in return. Often there are fees associated with leases that can add even more money, such as excess mileage and unusual wear and tear. At this point, you either lease another vehicle or purchase one, because you need a car after all, right? If you finance the sleek Acura NSX, when paid, you own it outright. You can sell, keep, or trade it in for a new one — you decide. The bottom line is when you purchase a vehicle, you build equity, provided the value of the vehicle doesn't overly depreciate. This is more likely to happen if you finance for long terms. In general, if you finance for longer than six years, you likely cannot afford the vehicle. Taxes When leasing or buying a new Acura, whether it's the ILX, RDX, or NSX, you have to pay sales tax. The difference between leasing and buying is with a lease, you generally only pay sales tax on the down payment and monthly payment. However, this can vary widely depending on the tax jurisdiction you reside in. Sometimes you pay sales tax on the entire value, so be sure to check. If you put $3,000 down on an Acura TLX lease, and your payment is $250 per month for 36 months, your entire tax burden at 5 percent is roughly $600. When you purchase that new Acura TLX, you are responsible for paying the sales tax on the entire value. If the car costs $30,000 and the tax rate is 5 percent, you must pay $1,500. That's more than twice what you pay for a lease. It is best to figure out how much you plan on driving the car, what you can afford every month, and then shop for the deal that best fits your lifestyle and budget.
