Wyler Aerial Tramway If you want to see the landscape for miles and miles, take a ride on the Wyler Aerial Tramway. Here you'll be able to see Texas, New Mexico, and Chihuahua, Mexico. The views are unlike anything else you'll ever see, and on a clear day, you may be surprised how far off the horizon is. The gondolas used for the tramway travel 2,600 feet to take you to the top of Ranger Peak. During the ride, you'll learn about the rock formations and cacti that you see. Overall, the ride to the top takes about four minutes, and Ranger Peak sits 5,632 feet above sea level. more Scenic Drive Overlook Take the time for a scenic drive that is perfect for the daring. Scenic Drive meanders up the edge of the mountains, taking you to the southern tip of the Franklins. During the drive itself, you'll be able to see the city from a height, but when you get to the scenic overlook, you'll be amazed at the views. Consider taking the Scenic Drive to the Overlook at sunset or sunrise for a romantic rendezvous. Bring along a picnic lunch to sit and enjoy the height for as long as possible during the daytime. Franklin Mountains State Park If the Scenic Drive Overlook isn't enough for you, head to Franklin Mountains State Park. The park is located at 1331 McKelligon Canyon Road. Here you'll find a variety of unique and interesting hiking trails, rock climbing areas, and camping spots. Bring along your camera to catch all the views throughout the park. You can explore over 100 miles of trails on foot or on a mountain bike. You can even get a guided mountain biking or hiking tour throughout the park. Get even more airspace when you rock climb in Sneed's Cory or McKelligon Canyon. Hot Air Balloon Rides While 2017 isn't going to have the normally annual Balloon Festival in El Paso, that doesn't mean that you can't get inside a balloon and explore the open air. There are several companies in El Paso that offer hot air balloon rides, piloted by experts. Head up alone, with your significant other, or as a group, to see the world like you haven't before. Balloon rides generally last anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour in the air, but preparation time can take longer. El Paso, Texas, is not too far from the Rio Grande river. While there is plenty to do in this city, for both residents and tourists, festivals are one of the main attractions. Every year, there are dozens of festivals within driving distance from El Paso. If you're interested in going to one of these festivals, here are some within a two-hour drive from El Paso, that will be occurring in June 2017. Annual Billy The Kid Breakout Festival In June 2017, you should consider stopping by the Annual Billy the Kid Breakout Festival. It will be held in the San Elizario Historic District, from June 2nd to June 4th. This event is free to the public and there will be exhibits and activities that guests can take part in each day, from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Billy the Kid is a famous gunfighter of the American Old West. He is known for participating in the Lincoln County War as well as for murdering eight men. Sheriff Garrett shot and killed Billy the Kid. However, according to many legends, Billy the Kid did not die that night. Since then, many men have claimed that they are Billy the Kid. more Village Vibes Golf Tournament The Village of Vinton, Keep Vinton Beautiful, and other community partners are responsible for making the Village Vibes Golf Tournament a reality. These community partners created the golf tournament as a fundraiser to support the Village Vibes Music Festival. As Keep Vinton Beautiful is an environmental non-profit organization, the proceeds from both the Village Vibes Golf Tournament and the Village Vibes Music Festival will help pay for a new learning center and community garden in the village of Vinton. The community garden and learning center will be in the center of Vinton on four acres of land. The community garden will produce fresh fruits and vegetables for the Vinton residents. Local farmers will be able to make a living by growing produce and local residents and students can learn about the environment at the learning center. The Village Vibes Golf Tournament is on June 2, at 11:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Vinton will hold the event at the Painted Dunes Desert Golf Course. The event costs $150 for an individual and $500 for teams. Boarder City Game Convention 2017 The Boarder City Game Convention is a tabletop gaming convention in El Paso. This is a three-day event occurring from June 23 to June 25. Each day, the convention will take place from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. This is a great event for seasoned gamers, casual gamers, and those who are simply interested in learning more about tabletop gaming. The Three Wizard of the Moustache, LLC runs this convention. The festivals in El Paso are a great way to have a great time and connect with other people within the community. Sun City Craft Beer Festival Thanks to the growing popularity of microbreweries and craft beers, someone came up with the idea to hold a one-day festival on the last Saturday of April from 1 to 8 p.m. so attendees can sample them all. On the day in question, visitors age 21 and up can visit the Sun City Craft Beer Festival and sample any of 150 different brews from 60 different breweries, most of which are small and local to the area. Along with that, attendees can enjoy live music on two stages, food truck fare, some unusual games, and beer-brewing workshops. General admission is $30, with $80 for VIP tickets and $10 for alcohol-free admission. The event takes place at the Convention Center Plaza. more La Vina Spring Festival La Vina is a winery that sits just across the border from El Paso in New Mexico, and twice each year it puts on a festival to celebrate and promote its wine along with other Southwestern wineries. The spring event takes place on the fourth weekend of April from noon to 7 p.m. on both days, and you can catch some live music between tastings. Tickets cost $20 for an adult of drinking age (since they include up to nine free tastings) or $10 for younger guests. Tequila, Taco, and Cerveza Fest The Tequila, Taco, and Cerveza Fest is a special festival that organizers put on in cities throughout Texas, New Mexico and Southern California. El Paso is one such city, and it'll take its turn on the first Saturday of May. The goal of the festival is the same as the Sun City Craft Beer Festival -- to introduce people to all the unique local flavors of tequila, Mexican beers, and tacos. The event takes place from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Cohen Stadium, and general admission is just $12. Other activities include mariachi music and chihuahua racing. El Paso Ice Cream Festival There's no doubt that ice cream is a valuable commodity in the heat of a desert summer, so it's no wonder El Paso hosts an Ice Cream Festival on the first Sunday of July. The event runs from 4 to 10 p.m. at the Cohen Stadium, and advance general admission tickets cost only $10 each, including a complimentary sweet treat and plenty of ice cream tastings. Also, because the festival happens in early July, it wraps up with a fireworks display to celebrate Independence Day. The people of El Paso regularly celebrate the food and drinks made right in their own backyards, whether they happen to be alcoholic or not. El Paso Downtown Artist and Farmers Market With the mild temperatures in the winter, El Paso residents and visitors can visit the El Paso Downtown Artist and Farmers market all year. This market opened in 2011 and now offers regionally grown fruits and vegetables, food from local farmers, arts and crafts from locals, food vending, and live entertainment. The market takes place at the Union Plaza district every Saturday and offers activities for the entire family to enjoy. more Ardovino's Desert Crossing Farmers Market Running ten years strong, Ardovino's Desert Crossing Farmers Market runs from Memorial Day through the fall. You'll also find handmade arts and crafts at this farmers market. Visitors can't get enough of the local produce, burritos, and —get this — the Vintage Coffeestream with coffee and homemade pastries. La Vina Winery Farmers Market If you're looking for something a little different, head to La Vina Winery for their Sunday market. The winery hosts a farmers' market that is both pet-friendly and family friendly on their 24-acre vineyard. Enjoy over 20 wines for tasting and food and organic produce. The market is hosted every Sunday at the winery from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Las Cruces Farmers and Crafts Market Although it's about a 40-minute drive, it's definitely worth making the trip to visit Las Cruces Farmers' and Crafts Market. Over 300 vendors regularly attend the farmers' markets, looking for local produce like pecans, and honey. This famous market started in 1971 and is still going strong. You can also enjoy live music and handmade crafts while drinking a cup of local coffee and enjoying a wood-fired bagel. Monticello Farmer's Market Although it's not as big as some of the other markets around El Paso, the Monticello Farmers' Market shouldn't be overlooked. The market offers over 25 vendors, with live music and activities for the entire family to enjoy. The vendors include fresh organic fruits and vegetables along with other foods and handmade crafts. Farmer's Markets are a great place to get organic fruits and vegetables without paying the supermarket prices. Sunland Derby The beginning of spring also brings preparations for the Kentucky Derby, one of the biggest horse races in the world. To prepare, many of the leading contenders start at the Sunland Derby to break in new horses and test them to see where they can improve. You're even likely to see entire families in ensemble costumes with a high level of quality and accuracy; you and your family should try it at least once in your lives. Now that the holidays are almost here, it's the perfect time to plan how you'll celebrate. Fortunately, El Paso offers plenty of options. Keep reading to learn about some of them. Head to Rudolph Plaza for the Up and Running Jingle Bell Run Lace up your tennis shoes, grab your favorite water bottle, and take part in the Up and Running Jingle Bell Run on Dec. 17. This is a 5-kilometer event that begins at Rudolph Plaza, and if you're not up for running the route, you can join in as a walker. This event has been held for the past nine years as a charity event that benefits the girls' track team at El Paso High School. Once you reach the finish line, warm up with hot cocoa and tamales. Runners are encouraged to wear Santa hats, and if you're in the mood to go all out, you can dress up as Santa or one of his elves and put yourself in the running to win a $50 gift card. There is a $30 entry fee for the run, but the cost is only $25 if you sign up before Dec. 16. Now that you've learned about a few of El Paso's upcoming holiday events, hopefully you'll feel compelled to get out and enjoy them instead of staying cooped up indoors. Plan to attend some of these celebrations, and bring some friends too. more Meet at Eastwood High School for a Holiday Walk If you're feeling a little lethargic due to disruptions in your routine coupled with rich holiday treats, get energized by taking part in the Deby Lewis Eastwood to Eastridge Holiday Lights Memorial Walk, which happens on Dec. 18. This is an inaugural event, and as you might have guessed, this fundraising walk starts at Eastwood High School and goes through the Eastridge neighborhood to Trooper Stadium. To mark the season, the stadium will feature beautiful luminaries. Also, the 5 p.m. start time is perfect for watching the luminaries light up the night in a dazzling way. Once you reach the stadium, sip hot chocolate and listen to the festive sounds of the Eastwood band and choir as they perform holiday carols. All proceeds from this event go towards scholarships for graduates of Eastwood High School. Go to the Plaza Theatre for a Beloved Ballet Performance The holiday season just isn't complete without watching talented ballet dancers perform "The Nutcracker," and now you can do so in person rather than watching a recording of the famous story playing out on stage. On Dec. 23 and 24,  40 members of the Moscow Ballet will delight you and your family. Performances on the 23rd take place at 3 and 7 p.m., and the performance on Dec. 24 happens at noon, which means there's plenty of time left to take care of other holiday obligations. With a backdrop of red, orange, and gold foliage in the mountains, 35 to 50 balloons float into the sky, augmenting nature's color show.
