Franklin Mountains State Park Franklin Mountains State Park spans over 24,000 acres, making it the largest urban park in the United States. If you want some sunshine and are up for some hiking, this is the place to be. The park is within a 15-minute drive of the downtown El Paso area, and once you arrive, you can explore over 100 miles of trails. The park is also popular for mountain biking and all-terrain vehicles, so if you're craving something more athletic, you can enjoy a challenging ride while you soak up some sunshine. Thousand Steps Trail If you're looking for a moderate hike, pack your things and go to the trailhead for Thousand Step Trail. This path is part of Franklin Mountains State Park, and you can access it off N. Stanton Street near the Camelot Corporate Condominiums. But be prepared for a challenge. This trail is ranked as a moderate hike, and the steps get steep enough at some points that you'll have to use your hands to ascend. Your efforts will be rewarded with some warm sun and an excellent view of El Paso. Scenic Drive Overlook If you want one of the best views of El Paso without having to hike for it, go to Scenic Drive Overlook. Scenic Drive Overlook is south of Franklin Mountains State Park off Scenic Drive above Golden Hill. The area is adorned with benches for sitting and paths for walking, and the view on clear, sunny days is incredible — you can see all the way across the border into Cuidad Juarez. El Paso Desert Botanical Gardens Part of Keystone Heritage Park, the El Paso Desert Botanical Gardens is an excellent spot for a light walk, stopping to smell the flowers, and admiring El Paso's towering mountains in the distance. The outdoor gardens feature yuccas, prickly pears, cholla, and other native flora. El Paso Municipal Rose Garden El Paso Municipal Rose Garden is another spot with beautiful foliage. On the edge of Memorial Park, you'll find that visiting this intimate four-acre garden is a fantastic way to spend an afternoon. More than 1,500 roses representing 430 varieties are on display at this lush park. Gardeners add new roses ever year, and volunteers carefully maintain the plants. With a history stretching back as far as 1680, El Paso has one of the most diverse and lengthy cultural backgrounds in the country. While this interesting background is still seen today in El Paso's food and culture, the city also has some of the most beautiful buildings in the Southwest. If you're an architecture buff, make sure to take a look at some of these amazing and iconic El Paso buildings. St. Patrick Cathedral Located in downtown El Paso, St. Patrick Cathedral is one of the El Paso's most recognized historic landmarks. Designed by the St. Louis architectural firm Barnett, Haynes, and Barnett, the cathedral's construction started in 1914 and was completed on Thanksgiving Day in 1917. Built in a blended style of Byzantine and Romanesque styles, the cathedral is unlike any other building in the city. more Inside, it features ornate stained glass windows, marble altars, a pipe organ with 2,500 pipes, and a 300-year old painting of the Virgin Mary given by an anonymous donor in 2002. The cathedral is open for visits from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day, although attending a mass in either English or Spanish makes this work of art come alive. Lhakhang Cultural Exhibit Built in 2008 for the Smithsonian's Folklife Festival, the Lhakhang Cultural Exhibit went through an interesting series of events to end up on the campus of UTEP. The interior of Lhakhang was constructed in Bhutan and sent to the States where it was assembled by a team of American and Bhutanese workers. After the festival ended, the plan was to throw the building away, but UTEP had other plans. In 1916, UTEP was known as the Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy. Looking to expand the campus, the dean wanted to build something memorable, and asked his wife Kathleen Worrell, for suggestions. Inspired by photos of Bhutanese architecture in National Geographic, Worrell suggested the Bhutanese theme, which can still be seen in buildings today. The Lhankang was purchased and assembled on campus a few years later and is officially listed as a gift from Bhutan to El Paso. Casa de Azucar The Casa de Azucar, or Sugar House, is the painstaking work of one of El Paso's residents. Started in 1973, Rufino Loya decided to make something to show his love for his wife that would last forever. To achieve this labor of love, he built small pillars of concrete inspired by traditional Mexican churches outside his home. Over the next 25 years, Loya spent thousands of hours sculpting the concrete masterpiece. The centerpiece of this sculpture is the altarpiece that marks the entrance to his home. Adorned with flowers, pineapples, vines, and other natural motifs, the altar took nearly 300 hours to complete. Few other cities can boast the architectural achievements of El Paso, and with many of the buildings in close proximity to one another, it's easy to form your own walking or driving tour. El Paso is in the west corner of Texas near Mexico and New Mexico. Many people think of it as just a pit stop on the way to more interesting locations, but the city is full of fascinating buildings and other sights that residents and travelers shouldn't miss. Billy the Kid lived here, and it's a favorite for filmmakers. Many popular movies, including Last Man Standing and Courage Under Fire, had some of their scenes filmed in the city. Here are some of the gorgeous buildings you should make sure to see in El Paso. The Trio of Churches on the Mission Trail The Mission Trail is one of the oldest roads in North America, and three historic churches sit along it. In 2000, it became a National Historic Trail. The Ysleta Mission has been around since 1660, and people have rebuilt it several times. It has a beautiful bell tower with a silver, domed roof, and it's surrounded by picturesque scenery. The Socorro Mission is almost as old. It was restored in 2005. Its open-air bell tower has an angular look, and Native American tribes in the area influenced the design. more The San Elizario Chapel was built in 1684 and rebuilt in 1882 after a flood. It also has a large, open bell tower. All these historic adobe churches look like they should be part of a Western movie, and visitors are welcome. The Plaza Hotel This imposing Art Deco skyscraper is a familiar downtown El Paso landmark, and it was the tallest building in El Paso until 1971. Conrad Hilton built it in 1929, and it's on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The building was Hilton's second skyscraper. It became the Plaza when he sold it in 1963. Elizabeth Taylor lived in the penthouse after she married Nicky Hilton, Conrad Hilton's son. Renovations should be complete in 2018, and the 19-story building will include three floors of luxury apartments. The Plaza Theatre This building was constructed in 1929 as well, but it's not related to the Plaza Hotel. Its Spanish Colonial style is similar to the churches on the Mission Trail, but the interior's ornate look is a great example of Gilded Age decor. The huge Mighty Wurlitzer organ accompanied vaudeville shows. The ceiling still looks like a starry sky. It was the first theatre with air conditioning in the United States, and it was restored in 2001. It has a children's theatre, a rooftop garden, meeting facilities, and a restaurant. Many people call it The Showplace of the Southwest. It's still a favorite spot for theatre and movie fans. The free El Paso Museum of Art, with a large collection of Southwestern and local artwork, is right next door. Los Aguachiles Near Interstate-10 and Resler Canyon, Los Aguachiles is a small, authentic Mexican style seafood restaurant. A hidden gem located in an inauspicious strip mall along Mesa Street, the cheesy Baja beach-shack interior does nothing to prepare you for the outstanding seafood, Clamatos, and grilled favorites. Los Aguachiles uses simple, fresh ingredients, packed with flavor. If you love your seafood with a spicy kick, you need to try the aguachiles, skillfully marinated in an assortment of sauces. For more mild flavor, try the Camaron para picar. Stop by in shorts, jeans, and a t-shirt for a refreshing lunch or dinner. Los Aguachiles closes on weekdays at 9 p.m. and is open late until 10 p.m. from Thursday through Saturday. If you're looking for delectable pork ribs, look no further than the State Line. With that, you'll get a sample of the brisket, beef ribs, and smoked sausage. If you'd prefer to stick to just one meat, you can opt for the brisket platter or the rib platter. Both will likely keep you full all day long. The hardest part is choosing between all of the sides. If it's your first visit to the Rib Hut, try the sidewinders. You've never had fries like these before. A combination of curly fries and steak fries, they're crunchy yet fluffy. The toppings almost turn this side into a main course! 3. Famous Dave's Famous Dave's prides itself on its authentic Texas barbecue. All of its ribs are smoked in live-wood smokers using genuine hickory logs. They're slow-cooked for hours and hand-rubbed with a custom blend of spices. After hours of slow cooking, they toss them on the barbecue to caramelize the sauce just before serving. If your mouth isn't watering after that, try the cedar plank salmon or the sweetwater catfish. It's unlike any barbecue experience you've had before. Even the desserts here are famously delicious. Dig into the gigantic Kahlua brownie or the bread pudding with pecan praline sauce. 4. Rudy's Rudy's is all about pork ribs and piles of brisket. This Texas institution has a country store and restaurant right in El Paso and is a must for visitors and locals alike. They also offer pork loin, chicken wings, baby back ribs, and a plethora of sides that you'll want refills on. Rudy's beans are a must, but the corn bread is also a crowd pleaser. In addition to having top-class bands, it also has a full-service bar and restaurant, a cafe, and over 50 televisions to watch the stage from wherever you're seated. 4. McKelligon Canyon The McKelligon Canyon Amphitheater is a stunning outdoor music venue in El Paso. Throughout the summer you can enjoy country music at the Cool Canyon Nights festival. Entry is free, and the whole area is surrounded by food trucks and bar carts. It's one of the most beautiful places to enjoy a concert during the warm summer months. 5. Abraham Chavez Theater This downtown theater is one of the best live music venues in the region.
