2025 Acura MDX vs 2025 RDX

Acura SUVs are well known for having innovative technology, impressive performance standards, and impeccable style. Choosing between the 2024 Acura MDX and the 2025 Acura RDX at your Acura dealership can be quite a challenge. Explore the best features of each premium SUV model to decide which Acura fits the needs of your growing family.

The 2025 Acura MDX is larger than the crossover compact 2025 Acura RDX, which means you will need to decide if a three-row or two-row SUV is better suited to your family’s needs. In terms of seating capacity, the RDX can seat five passengers, while the MDX seats up to seven. Importantly, the base RDX model has a rear underfloor storage area so you have an extra space to tuck cargo.

Cargo space is an essential feature to consider, especially if you need plenty of room for recreational gear. The base RDX model has a dedicated cargo space of 29.5 cubic feet with the second-row seats upright and 58.9 cubic feet with the second-row folded. The MDX, on the other hand, offers 16.3 cubic feet of dedicated cargo area with all seats upright and a maximum of 71.4 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

Powertrain and Performance

The entry-level MDX is equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 motor that delivers 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque. This powertrain is paired with a standard front-wheel drivetrain and a 10-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters on the steering wheel to engage the Sequential SportShift driving mode. The FWD model boasts a towing capacity of 3,500 lbs, which is enough power to haul a small pop-up camper.

The base RDX model has a 2.0-liter turbocharged motor that generates 272 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. This model has a standard Super Handling AWD system designed to maximize all-weather sport performance and a 10-speed automatic transmission. This compact SUV can tow up to 1,500 lbs, which is ideal if you want to flat tow motorbikes or other modest attachments.

Fuel Economy

Each of these Acura SUVs has idle-stop engine technology that senses when the vehicle is sitting in idling traffic and cuts power to the engine to conserve fuel. The RDX gets an estimated 21 MPG in the city, 27 MPG on the interstate, and 23 MPG combined. The MDX FWD has an estimated gas mileage of 19 MPG on urban streets, 26 MPG on the freeway, and 22 MPG combined.

In a head-to-head competition, each of the Acura SUVs has similar fuel economy estimates. Ultimately, drivers will need to decide which SUV is best based on passenger seating, cargo space, and towing capacity. Drop by Fox Acura of El Paso in El Paso, TX to test drive each of these models.
