Despite not being a massive metropolitan city, El Paso offers a wide array of musical entertainment throughout its various venues!
Lowbrow Palace
This music venue is great for those wanting to hear local talent or the occasional international touring band. An all-ages venue, it hosts concerts mostly featuring alternative rock bands. The Lowbrow Palace also is home to a local “battle of the bands.”
Speaking Rock Entertainment Center
If you are seeking a more varied musical selection, pay a visit to the Speaking Rock Entertainment Center, where there’s something going on every night of the week. The center hosts a free-of-charge pop night every Monday, featuring English and Spanish rock music for three hours, starting at 8 p.m. The venue also offers live concerts and tribute band nights. Musical styles range from rock, Latin music, and pop to funk, blues, jazz, and reggae. Amplify your musical by grabbing a bite and a cocktail at their restaurant or one of many bars. Most events are 18+.
The Black Orchid Lounge
If you’re seeking something classy, head on over to the Black Orchid Lounge. This venue is mainly home to jazz musicians, but also hosts open-mic nights; be sure to bring along your guitar! The tantalizing atmosphere of relaxing music can be accompanied by the lounge’s signature quality cocktails, which have gained notoriety in many local and national editorials! Live music at the lounge can be heard on Fridays and Saturdays starting at 9:30 p.m.
Plaza Theater
This particular venue is great for the classical music aficionado. Located in downtown El Paso, the theater offers concerts performed by the El Paso Symphony Orchestra, which was established in the 1930s. Led by Czech conductor Bohuslav Rattay, the performances usually run for about two hours, including a 15-minute intermission. The symphony performs works for orchestras as well as accompanying soloists, some of whom have won Grammy Awards! As far as attire goes, business casual would be one’s best bet (tuxedos not required). Unless otherwise noted, concerts start at 7:30 p.m.
McKelligon Canyon Amphitheater
Last but not least, visitors to El Paso can visit the McKelligon Canyon Amphitheater, a venue that can host around 1500 concert-goers. Located next to the Franklin Mountains, the amphitheater lies between canyon walls and under the Southwestern sky. The open-air feeling and natural backdrop of the local geography enhances one’s musical experience. During the hot summer months, local and regional artists take part in the Cool Canyon Nights, a free summer concert series; perfect for those on a budget. The venue hosts a popular musical extravaganza titled “Viva! El Paso”, which shows the 400-year old history of the El Paso region. The show has been entertaining audiences for over three decades. Performances are held every Friday and Saturday in June, July, and August.
Whether you’re looking for a bar with rock music, a sophisticated lounge with jazz in the background, or a relaxing night at the symphony, El Paso is a one-stop-shop in providing memorable quality entertainment!
